Built in the 1910s, Cedarvale was intended to be a gated community, and the columns of this incomplete gate still stand at the intersection of Bathurst and Claxton.

Earnest Hemingway lived in a building on 1599 Bathurst while he was working for the Toronto Star in the 1920s: The building now bears a plaque about its famous resident.

Cedarvale has a vibrant Jewish population, and is home to the Holy Blossom Temple, founded in 1856, which is the oldest synagogue in Canada.
